Chapter Seventeen

“It’s only me.”

“Coming,” I said,

Nerves about seeing Kris took over any fear I may have had, so when she tapped on the door, I raced to answer, drawing the bolt back and unlocking it.

“Hello, stranger,” she said, as I pulled the door open.

“Hi, Kris.” It was every bit as awkward as expected, but I was glad she was here.

“So…” She stepped inside. “…what’s so important I needed to rush over?”

“A lot has happened since I saw you last.”

“I’ve got all night, so where do you wanna start?”

I gave her an abbreviated version of my trip home, conveniently leaving out the fact Georgia was a goddess. She barely raised an eyebrow and seemed to have mellowed since the last time we spent time together.

But when it came to Frankie, there was a definite shift. She tried to hide it, but I saw the flicker of the old Kris lurking behind her eyes.

“Professor Marten? You hooked up with Professor Marten…wow.”

“I know, but it just sort of happened, you know.”

“I’d never have her pegged as a lesbian.”

“Me either.” I felt awful sharing this with my ex-girlfriend, it couldn’t have been pleasant to hear. “But it happened and…”

“Do you like her, Willow?”

“Erm…” I hesitated for two reasons. One; it didn’t seem right rubbing Kris’s nose in it, and two; subsequent events had taken the shine off the incredible night we shared.

“I’ll take that as a yes.”

“No, don’t take it as anything, Kris. I really don’t know what to make of it. It wasn’t planned, shit, I had no idea when she asked me to join her for a drink, we’d end up in bed together.”

“Isn’t she supposed to be married.”

“She is married, but there’s loads going in her life right now, but I don’t want to discuss it.”

“Why not?”

“It’s not my business to tell.”

“You know it won’t go any further–you can trust me.”

“I know I can, but still, if people were gossiping about the state of my relationships, I’d hate it.”

“I guess so.”

She didn’t push it, which surprised me a little. “Sorry.” I felt hypocritical as I’d discussed everything about our relationship with Frankie.

“Don’t be, I get it.”

I liked this new understanding version of Kris. She was easy to talk to. “I’m worried for her though.”

“Yeah, I get that.”

“She doesn’t seem overly concerned though.”

“If this person has been hanging around her house, she should be. Neither of you knows what this person is truly capable of.”

“God, don’t say that because he could be outside waiting right now.”

I jumped off the sofa and rushed to my window. Luckily, I wasn’t on ground level, but I scanned the street anyway. From what I could see, the darkened street was deserted.

“You’ll be perfectly safe with me here.”

“But you won’t always be here, Kris, and what happens when I’m alone?”

“I know we’re not together, but I could hang around until this mess dies down. I’m happy to crash in the spare bedroom.”

“Would you do that for me?”

“I still love you, Willow. It was you who ended it, remember?”

I didn’t know how to respond.
